Patrick McCallum
President
Patrick McCallum is the President of CBT and the President of McCallum Group, Inc. a governmental relations firm specializing in community college issues.
Described as “an amazing strategist with integrity and persistence,” Mr. McCallum is a widely recognized expert on community college issues in California, and considered one of the most savvy, influential lobbyists in Sacramento. Patrick has participated in every major community college related strategy session in the California Legislature for the past 30 years, and has visited over 100 community colleges as part of his work.
As a lobbyist, Patrick has helped to find solutions to problems such as creating new policies and addressing fiscal and budget issues. He recognized that these are common issues faced by many community colleges, and wanted to find a way to bring together the many skilled college professionals he knew to help colleges address their challenges. Patrick created the College Brain Trust as a tool to help colleges be more successful at creating successful students. He believes that by improving systems and working with college administrators, faculty, and staff, colleges can begin and continue to see steady student success.
Patrick earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Economics from San Francisco State University and a Masters in Public Policy from Occidental College. He also served as a Coro Fellow. As Executive Director of Faculty Association of Community Colleges (FACCC), Patrick facilitated strategic planning, innovative changes and consensus building which helped grow the membership of this once-dying, now-thriving organization from 1600 members in 1981 to over 10,000 members in 1998. Prior to his work FACCC, Patrick served as a Consultant to the Assembly Higher Education Committee and as a Staff Consultant to two Assembly Members. Before working in the Capitol, Patrick worked for the US Department of Labor.
Patrick is active in his community, volunteering on the Capitol Public Radio Board. He also serves on the Board of Jericho, a group that advocates on behalf of the poor and educates its members on public policy issues affecting California.
Patrick is dedicated to helping his clients meet their goals, and advocating for the resources they need. According to former California State Senator John Vasconcellos, “Long after other advocates have given up and packed their bags for another day, Patrick is still on the job, figuring out who’s where…effectively building coalitions ardently and effectively supporting their enactment into law.”
