He is responsible for campus safety, operations and services, and capital projects, including planning and construction management. He oversees seven departments and 75 employees at the District, including College Police Services, Buildings, Grounds and Custodial Maintenance, Print Services and Shipping/Receiving, and Student Transportation. Butte College owns and operates the largest transportation system in the California Community College System, transporting over 1600 students each day. Mike also manages the Technical Services Department, which administers all Capital Construction and reporting for the District. This includes programming, bid preparation and award, and construction management. He has been leading the team in completing over $200 million in construction projects, both large and small, on the main college campus and the Chico campus, including five new major buildings and numerous modernizations. He is coordinating the efforts on all these projects to assure they are built in the most economic and energy efficient manner possible. All the current projects he has managed have been designed and constructed well under Title 24 requirements and delivered on time and on budget.
Mike most recently was managing two large construction projects on the campus totaling approximately $53M where both buildings will be LEED certified and are currently at the LEED Gold level. Mike also managed the design and implementation of the campus Phase I Solar project that included 900 kW of solar panels and recently completed the Phase II Solar Project, which includes five new arrays, for a total campus solar power output of 2.6 million kWh annually. These projects provide 43% of the power used on the main campus and will help off-set the growing utility costs for years to come. With on-going conservation projects, the campus electricity supply will be 50% solar by 2010.
Mike is the co-chair of the Sustainability Steering Committee at Butte College, chair of the Land Use/Environment and Safety Committees. As the Campus Safety Officer, Mike is responsible for campus wide safety and emergency response. Under his leadership, the College as decreased lost time accidents and claims over 50% over the last seven years through aggressive training and accident prevention.
With his leadership and knowledge, the College established an annual sustainability conference to further assist community colleges facilities efforts on sustainability.
