Strategic Planning Colloquium

CBT helped Cypress College with its Strategic Planning Colloquium. Consultant John Spevak worked with Cypress’s director of institutional research and the director of staff development in the planning and facilitation of the colloquium.

During the two months prior to the colloquium, they reviewed Cypress’s planning documents within the context of the North Orange County Community College District planning process.

John helped Cypress develop the list of participants, the documents to be sent in advance to each participant, and a detailed agenda for the colloquium.

During the colloquium itself, John helped the group of 53 members of the Cypress College community:

  • identify significant issues;
  • develop overarching goals in response to these issues, linking them with appropriate District
  • Strategic Directions;
  • identify measurable objectives under each goal; and
  • develop the first draft of an action plan.

John used a style of enthusiasm, inclusiveness, sense of humor, and task-orientation, which meshed well with the Cypress spirit of collaboration and camaraderie. Within the day and a half colloquium, he combined hard work with enjoyment, using a personal touch to help achieve significant outcomes.

After the colloquium, Cypress President Dr. Michael Kasler wrote to John, “Our thanks go to you for fitting in extremely well into our Cypress Culture and doing an excellent job in facilitating our colloquium. You were the right person!”
