CBT Case StudiesCBT work with Irvine Valley College to Decelop a Culture of Mutual Respect and CivilityIn November 2011, in response to the top District-Wide Strategic Planning Objective, Irvine Valley College was looking for ways to develop a culture of mutual respect and civility on campus. The college and district had gone through some challenging times in the past two decades and wanted to make IVC a better place in which to work and live. The college contracted with the College Brain Trust to assign one of CBT’s consultants, Dr. John Spevak, to plan and facilitate a workshop on civility and mutual respect involving key constituents of the college community. In planning for the workshop, John talked with IVC president Dr. Glenn Roquemore. At John’s request, Dr. Roquemore designated three persons to work with John as co-planners: the president of the classified senate, the vice president of the academic senate, and a college dean. At a nearby off-campus location, John facilitated the day-long workshop which included 26 participants and explored issues and questions related to civility and mutual respect. Within small- and large-group discussions, all participants were heard. Over the course of the day the group developed and prioritized through consensus significant ideas which would be used by the IVC community in creating specific documents and plans to develop a culture of mutual respect and civility. At the end of the day the participants felt the workshop was a success. As one participant said in his evaluation, the workshop was “very well organized, kept the staff members motivated, and allowed them to express ‘real’ concerns.” President Glenn Roquemore felt the workshop was “a remarkable day” in which “the IVC team showed a very high level of engagement and a clearly articulated desire to discuss civility.” He told John, “You helped us move forward with a renewed spirit and sense of common understanding.” |
